Process for Volunteer Selection

How to Apply

If you have read this far, the next step is to fill out and submit a volunteer application form and three copies the reference form.

Application form as Microsoft Word doc

Reference form as Microsoft Word doc

The application is long and will take some time and thought to complete, but we hope it will be a useful reflection process for you, as well as a way for us to get to know you.

Please give the reference forms to three people who know you well; co-workers, co-members of peace and justice organizations, teachers, students, etc.

E-mail the completed application and reference forms to the Volunteer Recruitment address below.

Training and Selection

Following a pre-screening (usually a telephone interview), you may be invited to attend a 9 day training session. In preparation for the training, participants are asked to complete some pre-reading and workbooks. Trainings cover such topics as PBI structure and decision-making, nonviolence and non-partisanship, political analysis, cultural sensitivity, group process and dealing with fear, stress and emergency situations. There is a sliding-scale fee to offset some of the costs of the training.

Ideally, the training is a mutual exploration process - it helps you decide if volunteering with PBI is what you want to do and helps both you and us decide if you are adequately prepared for the experience. During the training each applicant will have an interview with at least one member of the training team to discuss questions or concerns. Within two weeks after the training, the team will be in touch with you to let you know their recommendation.

If there is a PBI office in your country, please contact them so they may notify you of training dates and other important information
