What we Offer

The PBI Indonesia Project offers an opportunity to work for 18 months in one of the IP project teams working on "making space for peace". IP volunteers have an opportunity to work in close contact with local NGO's and communities, as well as to develop skills in networking within all levels of government. The Indonesia Project offers:

  • Flight to Indonesia from your home country, and flight home at the end of your contract.
  • Accommodation in a PBI field team house with food and all living expenses covered.
  • A monthly stipend of aproximately USD$125/month (with an additional $30 in Jakarta)
  • 4 weeks/annual paid vacation, with a vacation stipend of$75/week.
  • Comprehensive health insurance including reimbursment for medications.
  • A repatriation allowance of USD$2100 following completion of an 18 month contract.
  • Subsidised Indonesian language training: volunteers pay $1500 tuition and may take as many lessons as needed to achieve the required level. This usually takes about 4 months of full time study. (Volunteers who already have Indonesian language skills and expect to need substantially less training can make individual agreements regarding language school cost.) Volunteers must cover their own living costs while doing language study. Basic living expenses can be covered with about $USD160/month, although individual needs vary greatly.

All volunteers participate in a 10-12 day intensive training session
prior to joining a project. Training costs are heavily subsidised, but
trainees are asked to pay a training fee, on a sliding scale based on
income. Trainings are held twice a year, in September and March. At
least 50% of the trainings are held in Indonesia.

Immediately prior to deployment to a field team, volunteers
also participate in an additional 2-4 day training that covers living and working practices, current groups the project is working with and other relevant
material.

In order to attend a training and begin the journey to becoming a PBI IP field team volunteer, applicants must complete an application form, provide letters of reference, and take part in a telephone interview.

Please give the reference forms to three people who know you well; co-workers, co-members of peace and justice organizations, teachers, students, etc.

E-mail the completed application and reference forms to the Training contact at the address below.

Training and Selection

Following a pre-screening (usually a telephone interview), you may be invited to attend a 10 or 12-day training session. Trainings cover such topics as PBI structure and decision-making, nonviolence and non-partisanship, political analysis, cultural sensitivity, group process and dealing with fear, stress and emergency situations. There is a sliding-scale fee to offset some of the costs of the training.

Ideally, the training is a mutual discernment process - it helps you decide if volunteering with PBI is what you want to do and helps both you and us decide if you are adequately prepared for the experience. Each applicant will have an interview with members of the training team to discuss questions or concerns. Within two weeks after the training, the team will be in touch with you to let you know their recommendation.

Summary of the selection process

If there is a PBI office in your country, please contact them so they may notify you of training dates and other important information.
