Peace Brigades International (PBI) is a unique grassroots, non-partisan human rights organization that places and maintains teams of volunteers in areas of conflict around the world. In accordance with its dual Protective Accompaniment (PA) and Participatory Peace Education (PPE) mandate in Indonesia, PBI seeks to:

  • Help maintain a peaceful space for civil society to operate and grow;
  • Model nonviolence and to promote nonviolent resolution of conflicts;
  • Foster social and political dialogue and reconciliation;
  • Empower civil society in all of the above activities, so as to reduce and eventually end the need for PBI.

Responding to emerging requests for further developing and integrating Participatory Peace Education initiatives in our Indonesia Project (IP), PBI is looking for individuals with relevant experience in peace-building activities preferably at a community level. This is a great opportunity to play a key role in providing both strategic and practical support for the IP. 18-month postings for candidates over 25 years old

IDR 1,150,000/month stipend + food, lodging and repatriation benefits on completion.

Joining our field teams, Participatory Peace Education volunteers will work in collaboration with the Peace Education Coordinator/s and other IP Sub-Committees to explore opportunities for and initiate/support community-based Peace Building activities. The Peace Education volunteer will recognize the strengths and knowledge in local communities and work with local organizations and partners who will be closely involved in the planning and implementation of any peace-building activity.

The key functions of this role include:

  • Identifying and developing resources and networks (e.g. maintaining and expanding contacts and relationships with relevant target groups, increasing the number of references and users of field-based libraries, participating in forums and joint activities)
  • Preparing the ground and reviewing requests for the implementation of viable community-based peace-building initiatives (incl. conducting needs assessment, increasing stakeholders' understanding of local conflicts, helping with imminent and long-term planning, providing logistical and technical support and ensuring proper monitoring, evaluation and follow-up of peace education activities)
  • Supporting internal and external capacity-building activities related to PPE and suitable for target groups (i.e. developing training materials, fostering use of alternative methodologies, creating active learning opportunities including participation in workshops, street theatre, writing guidelines and publications, etc)

The essential requirements for this position are:

  • Experience in facilitating training and/or implementing community development projects (e.g. needs assessment, problem-solving, objective-setting, action planning, scheduling, budgeting, adult learning and participatory training methods)
  • Background in the promotion of peace, social justice or the defense of human rights
  • Understanding of PBI's mandate (incl. non-violence, non-partisanship and consensus decision-making)
  • Willingness to live and work in a conflict-affected, team-based, grass-roots setting
  • Ability to work cross-culturally and build successful relationships with multiple stakeholders
  • Self-awareness and ability to identify and manage stress risks
  • Fluency in Indonesian and English (both written and oral)
  • Competent IT skills
